The process aimed at the progression of a megasporocyte cell over time, from initial commitment of the cell to a specific fate, to the fully functional differentiated cell. A megasporocyte is a diploid (2n) cell that undergoes meiosis and forms four haploid (1n) megaspores; also called megaspore mother cell.
