Definition
A cilium (also called flagellum) found in Giardia species (trophozoite stage). It originates at the left anterior basal body, extends laterally through the cytoplasm, crosses the right anterior axoneme, and exits as a membrane-bound flagellum on the anterior left side of the cell. Source: GOC:giardia, PMID:16607022, PMID:5961344, ISBN:9780124260207
Comment
Note that we deem cilium and microtubule-based flagellum to be equivalent; the primary term name reflects frequency of use. Also note that, due to the asymmetric nature of the Giardia trophozoite, this term is defined spatially as the trophozoite is viewed from the dorsal side, with the two nuclei dorsal to the ventral disc, and the ventral disc toward the anterior.
